“Your job won’t take care of you when you're sick. Your friends will. Keep in touch.” I believe this is a great quote and it goes along perfectly with the short story Cathedral. The short story was about a blind man and the wife of the narrator. The wife of the narrator took care of the blind man at a certain point in her life. From that moment on they became like best friends. The wife kept in contact with the blind after leaving the job. They sent tapes to each other constantly to keep in contact and tell each other about the important moments that are going on in their lives. Ten years later they still kept in contact, at this point the blind man also known as Robert his wife died. He went to visit his best friend, they hadn’t seen each other in forever. They finally get to spend sometime together.
Friendship is something you should never let go, and you should never judge. The narrator didn’t like that his wife was friends with a blind man. He didn’t think it was normal or even acceptable for a blind man to be friends with his wife. He couldn’t accept this for some reason. When he first saw Robert he came up with a bunch of scenarios to judge him. He judged him about the way his eyes looked, and how they made him feel uncomfortable and how he thought that he should wear dark glasses like he thought every blind wore because of the TV. He didn’t understand that this was his wifes best friend and that he had to accept Robert for what he was. Friendship is all about how good a person makes you feel, and how comfortable you feel with them. You don’t feel judged by them, and you can basically tell them everything you want without feeling uncomfortable.
